These pollutants can be potentially damaging to the environment and can contribute to climate change effects.

Oil
Oil is a highly visible contaminant. We work towards preventing oil pollution from vessel operations and minimising its impact on marine life and coastal communities.

We focus on ensuring the safe and secure transport of chemicals which, if released into the water, can affect the marine environment and our health.

Sewage
We take precautionary measures to prevent the discharge of sewage from our vessels into the sea.

Garbage
Garbage from ships can be harmful to marine life. We ensure the proper disposal of garbage from vessel operations to prevent fish and other marine life from becoming trapped in nets, bags or other items.

Ballast Water
Ballast water taken on by a ship in port or coastal areas may contain a variety of aquatic organisms or waterborne pathogens that can act as a vehicle for the translocation of marine species. These organisms can potentially affect local marine life, aquaculture, commercial fisheries, coastal industry and recreational facilities.

Anti-fouling Paints
Anti-fouling paint is used to coat the bottom of ships in order to prevent sealife, such as algae and molluscs, from attaching themselves to the hull, slowing down a ship and increasing fuel consumption. Some anti-fouling paints, however, may contain compounds that could adversely affect sea water and marine life.

Ozone Depleting Substances
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used in refrigerants can contribute to the deterioration of the earth’s protective ozone layer. At NOL, we only use ozone-friendly refrigerants in our fleet of equipment.
