Based in Singapore, Mr Widdows is responsible for the commercial, financial and global operations of NOL’s container shipping and logistics businesses. Prior to leading the NOL Group, Mr Widdows was CEO of NOL’s core container shipping business, APL, since January 2003. During his tenure as CEO, APL recorded its best ever financial results and cemented its position among the leading companies in the industry.

He previously held the positions of APL Senior Vice President, Liner Operations and Senior Vice President responsible for APL Americas Operations and Logistics, which included management of the US West Coast terminal operator company Eagle Marine Services and APL's Stacktrain Services subsidiary. For close to four decades, Mr Widdows’ career has tracked the development of the container shipping industry, from its initial focus on pure port-to-port services to today's end-to-end supply chain management.

Since joining APL in 1980, Mr Widdows has been intimately involved in operationalizing groundbreaking innovations introduced by APL, many of which are now employed industry-wide. He has also been a key figure in the evolution and development of the sophisticated carrier alliances, which have created worldwide service networks.

More recently, Mr Widdows has been the US shipping industry's leading advocate on public policy issues, increasing awareness by industry and Government regarding the need for transportation infrastructure development and efforts to advance the formulation of goods movement policy. In 2006, Mr Widdows’ efforts were recognized by both the National Defense Transportation Association and the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

From December 2006 to January 2010 he served as Chairman of the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement and Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement research and discussion groups. Mr Widdows was instrumental in significantly expanding the Membership of the Agreements. He helped elevate their profile in advocating for carrier interests with US and Asian governments. He also initiated forums where TSA and WTSA executives engage directly with importers and exporters to better understand the dynamics affecting the shipping community.

Mr Widdows has been Chairman of the World Shipping Council since 2008. The WSC represents the Liner Shipping industry in its engagement with governments regarding; security and customs regulations, regulatory affairs, and more recently a significant focus on the development of environmental standards related to air and water quality. Also in 2008, Mr Widdows was honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award for Excellence in Maritime Security.

In 2009, he received the AOTOS award, being named an “Admiral of the Ocean Seas” by the United Seamen’s Service for his contribution to the US maritime sector.
