Towards clean seas and blue skies

Across the NOL Group, responsible environmental management is a cornerstone of our worldwide operations. We continue to participate and support programs that help reduce our environmental footprint at sea and in our shoreside operations.

Initiatives

NOL Group’s container shipping line APL is on target to reduce its carbon exhaust measure by 30% by 2015 from its global operations. An influx of new vessels, running at reduced speed, puts the target within reach for the Group.

The Group is also undertaking additional steps to curb carbon exhaust emissions that include:

  • Optimising vessel trim, speed and routing;
  • Improving maintenance on vessel hulls to reduce drag in the water; and
  • Upgrading cargo handling equipment at APL terminals.

The Group continues to operate a significant percentage of its fleet at less than top speed. By slowing down its vessels, less fuel is consumed and exhaust emissions reduced. It has advanced a program that enables its ships to switch off powerful diesel generators when in port and eliminate emissions. Its vessels connect instead to cleaner-burning shoreside power.

Awards

NOL continues to receive recognition for its leadership in mitigating the environmental impact of world trade. In 2012, the Groups' liner shipping business, APL, was presented the Osprey award by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environment Protection Award by Seatrade Asia. In 2011, it was presented the Green Gateway Partners Gold Award by the Port of Seattle. In 2010, the Group was honoured with a number of awards including Sustainable Shipping's Operator of the Year, Marine Environment Protection Award from the North American Marine Environment, Best Green Shipping Provider & Shipping Line by Asian Freight and Supply Chain and 50 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics.
